Globally it is recognized that Freedom of information and the Freedom of right is a fundamental right of every human across the world. There are numerous countries that also need freedom of press or press freedom and its publications as per the Declaration of Windhoek.
This Declaration has been set up or initiated for the rights of the journalists as well as the Independent and Pluralistic Press. The Freedom of Press calls for the rights of humans in characterizing the press as a democratic press and pluralistic media in the world.
What is World Press Freedom Day?
What do we really mean by World Press Freedom Day? Do we as humans really know our rights and duties towards our country in broader perspective? I believe many Humans are still unaware of the fundamental rights and their duties. The World Press Freedom Day was adopted on May 3rd, 1993 by the United Nations.
It commemorates as a reminder of the anniversary of the Windhoek. (“The Declaration of Windhoek”). What is the Declaration of Windhoek all about? The Declaration of Windhoek is a free press principle set up by journalists (newspaper) in Africa which manifest in endorsing or urging an Independent African Press.
Why do we really have to fight for the Freedom? Why can’t we set ourselves free of any opinion in a democratic world? So, on the account of such incidents, the World Press Freedom Day was initiated and considered for Global Observance and fundamental rights of Press and Media. The Freedom of Press is an initiative which reminds the governments to respect and validate the right to freedom of expression and mark and remember the declaration of Windhoek commenced in the year 1991.
World Press Freedom Day History: –
The World Press freedom marks a reminder of the importance of the freedom of the press in a free and safe society and honouring and remembering the journalists who have lost their lives in the act of upholding the free press system. In the Article19, the Freedom of Press is a basic human right as listed in the Declaration of Human Rights.
The World press freedom day was initiated in the United Nations by African Journalists to encourage the independence and pluralistic press media. Thus, the history itself says the freedom of press media which emerged as a strong and independent support system in developing the country and voicing the opinion of the public. The World press freedom day is marked on the Declaration of Windhoek assembled in 1991.

It is celebrated to bring in awareness among the citizens or the public that in various countries around the world the publications are punished or fined or even suspended or shut down, while the editors, publishers, journalists are harassed, attacked or even murdered. It helps to take a stand and help or encourage the state of free press across the world.

The World Press Freedom day has its own significance for developing and stabilizing democracy in the entire nation and for economic growth. Media plays a very crucial role in the welfare of the country.
The common people are educated through the media about the society’s growth, events, issues which eventually affects the common people’s lives. So, the press and journalists involved should be given utmost importance as they are delivering important issues and performing their best duties.
World press day is an important and sensitive issue which reminds us about the increases challenges and how to tackle them.
It also serves as an important opportunity to bring upon together the independent and pluralistic media globally to provide information and preserve the freedom of the press in each and every facet. Press Freedom Day in India: –
Let’s take our country India into consideration as per the press freedom day. Many journalists and investigating reporters risk their lives and many have lost their lives in the freedom to bring the news to the country as well as the world. While the number of attacks has been reduced but is still going on at an alarming rate.
In the year 2016 and 2017, 54 journalists were attacked and 7 of them lost their lives. India ranks on the 136th position worldwide and has emerged as worst in the field of journalism. Press Freedom day is celebrated as 3rd May worldwide. It is celebrated to award and provide rewards to the journalists who risk their lives to bring the picture or scenario worldwide.
Many civic officials and government officers take part in various activities in felicitating the media.
